News24xx.com - Researchers recently found evidence showing Mars have had a sea in the past and a water cycle similar to Earth. Sediment deposits in the mouth of Hypanis Valles, Ancient Mars river system, are found in the remains of the delta.

Reporting from NHM, these geological features were formed when water meets Mars sea. The river delta is formed when a river meets water that moves more slowly.

Every small sediments that flows in the river settles on the ground and forms geological features over the time. This delta is in the north-south part of the planet which separates the highlands south from the northern lowlands.

Researcher of Planetary Surface Group, Joel Davis says the ocean on Mars means that it is likely that Mars has a water cycle that is very similar to Earth which has rivers, lakes and oceans.

"We think this Earth-like hydrological cycle is active at about 3.7 billion years ago. And it began to vaporate a little after that. Our research does not define evidence of ocean existence, but these geological features are very difficult to explain its existence without the ocean" said Joel.

The question is whether this water is in the form of large seas or oceans in the northern lowlands. This question is one of the difficult questions to answer in the study of the geological evolution of the red planet. The study, published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, shows that vast water once covered the northern third of the planet.

Scientists are currently studying this area because this area will be proposed as the ExoMars vehicle mission landing site in 2020. The mission of the vehicle includes searching for signs of life, including water signs.
