News24xx.com - Hanoi officials are urging people to stop eating dog and cat meat on the grounds that can damage the reputation of Vietnamese capital and cause dangerous diseases such as rabies. The Hanoi People's Committee said that the dog's eating habits can tarnish Hanoi's image as a 'civilized and modern capital.'

Hanoi City Government added that consuming dog meat can also cause the spread of diseases such as rabies and leptospirosis. The People's Committee also urged residents to stop eating cat meat which is not as popular as dog meat but is also available on the market.

To date more than 1,000 restaurants in Hanoi are still serving dog and cat meat. The city government also highlighted the fact that many cats and dogs were brutally killed. There are an estimated 490,000 dogs and cats in Hanoi - the majority are pets.

"More and more Vietnamese people disagree, but the culinary of dog meat is still popular, because 'habits are deeply rooted'" said Linh Nguyen, BBC Vietnam reporter. On social media, many people welcomed this decision, but there were also those who argued that eating habits of dogs and cats was a tradition that Vietnamese would not easily abandon.

One Facebook user, Dang Ngoc Quang, argued that the dish did not need to be completely banned, because it would be classified as deprivation of freedom. He suggested applying large taxes on dog meat or arranging to sell only in certain areas.
