News24xx.com - Jovito Palparan, the retired Philippine General was sentenced to 20 years in prison for being found guilty of involvement in the kidnapping of two activists accused of being seen by communist insurgents in 2006.

He was known as a 'slaughterer' among leftist groups because of his brutal tactics against communist guerrillas. And also accused of kidnapping two students in 2006 for allegedly engaging with communist groups. The fate of the two female students is still unknown.

From the witness's testimony, it was stated that the two students seen in a military camp being tortured were accurate testimonies. One witness said that the two students admitted to being raped.

Human rights groups have accused Palparan of being the mastermind behind the killing of leftist members when he was the highest-ranking officer to handle the war against communist guerrillas in rural Philippines. At that time Filpina was governed by President Gloria Arroyo.

The decision of the Bulacan provincial court read on Monday (17/9),

"He has the same view as his men to drive out the enemies of the state, which they see as appropriate to be removed from the face of the earth in every way,"

Regarding the judge's decision, Palparan denied the charges and called the judge "stupid" when the decision was read.

Quoted from CNN, Human Rights Watch said the court's decision on Palparan was a "hard blow" to the country's "forgiving culture" which caused figures to commit crimes without fear of being punished.

The Philippines has been fighting 49 years of communist resistance. And this is the longest conflict in Asia.
