News24xx.com - Facebook has removed features that allow users to translate posts and comments in Myanmar. This was done after Reuters reported the results of the translation showed ambiguous sentences.

A Reuters investigation published on August 15 documented how Facebook failed on its efforts to combat the vigorous Myanmar language writing about Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. In late August, UN investigators said Facebook had become a tool for spreading hatred against Muslim minorities. Reuters article here also shows that the translation feature is flawed.

A spokesman for Facebook said Myanmar language translation feature was turned off on August 28th. "We are working on ways to improve the quality of the translation and until then, we have turned off this feature for Myanmar language" a Facebook spokesman wrote by email to Reuters.

Facebook has other problems that interpret the language of Burma, Myanmar's main local language. In April, the California-based social media company installed Burmese translations of guidelines for implementing internal 'Community Standards'.

Reuters investigations found more than 1,000 examples of hate speech on Facebook. Facebook regulations specifically prohibit attacking ethnic groups by "violent or inhuman speech" or comparing them with animals.
