News24xx.com - A total of 10 policemen were killed in clashes with Taliban fighters in central Afghan province Wardak, officials said on Sunday, October 7, 2018. The incident came amid fighting to seize control of the arterial highway a day after Taliban fighters detonated a bridge.

"The Taliban burned down a government building in Sayeed district of Wardak Century and killed the district police chief along with nine other policemen on Saturday night," a senior police official was quoted as saying by Sindonews, quoting Reuters. Sunday 7 October 2018.

Repeated attacks on strategically important provinces, such as nearby Wardak and Ghazni, have become a show of force for the Taliban, underlining how volatile security in Afghanistan is two weeks before the national parliamentary elections.

Abdul Rahman Mangal, spokesman for the Wardak governor's office, said the Taliban raided several civilian houses after killing 10 policemen, destroying newly built checkpoints and cutting electricity to parts of the city.

"Government forces have attacked back to stop insurgents from approaching the city," Mangal said.

A statement from the main Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the militants had taken the town center of Sayeed Abad and all surrounding security checkpoints, killing many members of the security forces and seizing weapons, ammunition and vehicles.

Mohammad Arif Noori, a spokesman for governor Ghazni, said one soldier was killed by Taliban fighters as they tried to control parts of the province almost two months after being driven out of the city by US-backed Afghan forces.

The Taliban attacked Ghazni, a strategic location across the main highway that connects Kabul with southern Afghanistan, in August. The attack was the largest tactical operation launched by the Taliban since they invaded the northern city of Kunduz in 2015.

The confrontation killed 150 members of Afghan security forces and 95 civilians, as well as hundreds of Taliban fighters.
