News24xx.com - Australia's web-funnel spider is one of the deadliest arachnids in the world, and researchers have now found that they can even be used to kill certain cancer cells.

Research by QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute found that peptides extracted from Darling Downs webpage spider funnel toxins and synthesized chemically - have anti-cancer properties that can kill melanoma cancer cells in humans and stop the spreading.

This compound, which has also proven to be very effective in treating Tasmanian devil facial tumor cells, can be the basis for new cancer treatments.

Queensland principal researcher Dr. Maria Ikonomopoulou said that the peptide has been tested in laboratory experiments on similar compounds from Brazilian spiders, and she was surprised to find that the peptide has a very large effect.

Peptides are amino acid chains that are connected to one another by amide bonds, where the funnel net spider peptides are used in this international study to test their antibiotic and anti-cancer properties.
