Biography of World Leader: Erwin Rommel, World War II Desert Fox
News24xx.com - Erwin Rommel was a Nazi German general with the rank of Field Marshal (Commander in Chief) when World War II raged.
He served as Commander of the Seventh Panzer Division during the French Invasion which took place in 1940.
Then he was placed as commander of the African Corps. His leadership when leading a joint German and Italian army made him respected as the best tank commander, and earned the nickname der Wuestenfuchs or Desert Fox.
Because of his services, Rommel was named the biggest German military base, Barak Field Marshal Rommel at Augustdorf.
Rommel's first war experience was obtained on August 22, 1914 as a platoon commander in battle near Verdun, France.
There Rommel won the victory when he and three of his men shot the French garrison which seemed unprepared for an impending attack.
Rommel's war approach was to move quickly to the front of the enemy protected by artillery fire, and move to the position of the wing to gain the momentum of ambush.
For his services from September 1914 to January 1915, Rommel was awarded the Second Class Iron Cross medal award, and was promoted as Oberleutnant (First Lieutenant).
He was sent to a new unit of the Battalion of the Mountain of the Kingdom of Wuerttemberg Alpenkorps in September 1915, and served as commander of the company. October 24, 1917, Mount Wuerttemberg Battalion was involved in the Battle of Caporetto in the Austro-Italian field.
Rommel's troops got the task of seizing three mountains: Kolovrat, Matajur, and Stol. Within 2.5 days, Rommel and 150 of his men were able to seize 81 weapons and arrest 9,000 people including 150 officers with the death of six of their troops.
At that time, Rommel introduced infltration tactics, a war maneuver that was used today by any army in the world, and was often called Blitzkrieg without tanks.
November 9, 1917, he ordered an attack on Longarone with a small force, and was able to force the 10,000-strong Italian First Infantry Division to surrender.
For his actions, he received the Pour le Merite award. January 1918, he was promoted to Captain, and sent to the XL! V Corps of Forces until the war ended.
