For the sake of environment, starting on 209 Malaysia will ban the use of plastic straw

News24xx.com - Next year, all restaurants in Selangor region, Malaysia will not provide any plastic straws. The use of plastic bags is also getting additional fees. For this reason, Selangor authorities in Malaysia officially announced a ban on the use of plastic straws.

This was announced directly by the Chair of the Permanent Environment Committee, Green Technology and Consumer Services, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Hee Loy Sian on Wednesday, November 7th 2018 as reported by Sinar Harian. "Restaurant owners and food stalls are not permitted to provide any plastic straws and buyers who want them are required to buy to the restaurant" explained Hee Loy Sian.

Hee explained that this step is in line with efforts to combat pollution due to plastic waste. Besides that, it makes Selangor more environmentally friendly. According to him, it will be seen who the person that need straw to drink is or not. So, that the use of plastic straws will be trimmed by itself. Because it is still in the trial phase, restaurants that do not comply with these regulations will be warned.

However, the Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Datuk Seri Adnan Mohd Ikhsan said that official regulations will soon be issued in 2020. After consumers and owners of culinary businesses get education related to the dangers of using plastic products.

Furthermore, Hee reminded all Malaysians that by 2019, all regions will impose an additional 20 cents if they request plastic bags in shops and restaurants. Later the additional money will be given to the authorities per region and all the money will be used for social programs.
