The story of Petronilla, the first woman who was accused of being a witch and burnt alive
News24xx.com - The injustice of law seems to have happened from years ago, like what happened to Petronilla de Meath, the first Irish woman who was burned alive. She was killed on November 3rd 1324 after being accused of witchcraft. Back then, there was no law in Ireland about magic, so they called what Petronilla did as “heresy”.
Petronilla de Meath was a 24-year-old maidservant who had to be burned alive after people accused her of being a witch. However, the real target was actually Alice Kyteler, a noblewoman who was also Petronilla’s master.

The accusation actually emerged because Alice Kyteler outlived her three former husbands and was about to marry for the fourth time.
However, because she had access to power, Kyteler was able to run away from Ireland and escape the charges.
Unfortunately, it caused bad things to fall on the poor Petronilla, who could not escape the anger of the accusers and the bishop, Richard de Ledrede. Petronilla was arrested. She was then tortured, and brought by six different parishes to be humiliated and persecuted.

After two weeks of torture, Petronilla was forced to admit to the accusation. She was also accused of making a potion made from children’s body parts and participated in a mysterious community that could turn humans into cats. She ended up being burned alive at the stake in front of the civilians.
The accusation of witchcraft was actually based on church superstition in order to stop the practice of making traditional medicine. To this day, the place where Petronilla served Kyteler is still standing and becomes a tourist attraction.
