For the first time, Starbucks opens sign-language store in US

News24xx.com - This outlet located in Washington DC is the second sign language coffee shop after opening the first time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2016. A total of 24 employees are employed. Some of them are deaf people, have hearing problems, and those with perfect hearing. All of them use official American sign-language or ASL.

The opening of this sign language outlet is an opportunity for deaf people to be able to get a job in their community. "I am accepted here, eventhough im deaf" said one barista, Crystal Harris, quoting the Washington Post.

Not only that, Starbucks' concern for the Deaf community is also present in the shop design. From the outside, visitors can see Starbucks writings with hand drawings that symbolize each letter. Inside, there are also decorations to respect the culture of deafness.

The wall of the shop is decorated with mural paintings by Yiqiao Wang, a deaf artist. He presents eye images that represent visual connections, hands holding a cup of coffee, as well as other symbols related to deaf culture.

Starbucks also chose the location of the store adjacent to Gallaudet University, an educational institution designed for the deaf community. Starbucks Regional Vice President for the Atlantic Tengha, Camile Hymes, said that the selection of this location was chosen because it was related to advocacy for the deaf.
