Thought as a tumor, doctors shocked when found a live leech inside the throat of this woman

News24xx.com - Recently, a 63-year-old Vietnamese woman went through laparoscopy to remove the tumor in her throat. However, what they thought as tumor turned out to be a 6 inches leech that had lived inside the woman’s throat for 3 months.

The anonymous woman came from Ha Giang Province in Vietnam. At first, she had a severe headache along with nasal congestion. She also claimed that there was a slimy fluid that kept flowing to her throat.

Then, she went to hospital to confide to otolaryngologist. After various tests, there was something that they thought to be tumor inside her throat. Surgery was done in order to remove the tumor. But the doctor was shocked that instead of tumor, they found a living leech stuck in the woman’s throat.

In a video that was recorded by Dr. Nguyen Thanh Nam, the vice director of a hospital in Ha Giang, you can see the 6 inches leech still moving around on a medical tray after being taken out of the woman’s throat. No one knows exactly how the leech gets in there. The doctor speculates that the woman accidentally swallowed it when drinking or taking a bath.

Dr. Thanh Nam said that, based on the signs that the patient had explained, it was estimated that the leech had been there for 3 months. This case rarely happens, making it hard to diagnose.
