Shoplifters, the first non-anime movie from Japan which earns more than USD 2 million

News24xx.com - Variety reported, the Japanese drama, Shoplifters gets the income which exceeded the number of USD 2 million on Thursday, January 17th 2019. That was an unexpected achievement. It becomes the first non-anime film from Japan that reached the revenue of USD 2 million since 1985.

The achievement of movie A Fantastic Woman is also reported to be the same, but the film had been aired limited in 2017. The film that aired on Netflix, Rome was also mentioned strong on the market even though its release was limited to streaming service customers. But until now Netflix has not shown transparently its income for the film.

‘Shoplifters’ itself are made by Hirokazu Kore-eda. The film tells the family of shoplifter who adopted a daughter who came from a broken family. The film aired at the Cannes Film Festival last year and was nominated for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, although it had to be beaten by Rome. Shoplifters are also predicted to be nominated for an Oscar which will be announced on January 22nd.

"We knew from the screening at the festival that the audience really liked it, so we believed that if we made it available people would look for it" said Neal Block, head of the distributor at Magnolia who distributes Shoplifters which make Shoplifters itself is finally airing internationally.
