News24xx.com - Saturn is one of the planets that still hold many mysteries. But, this time the scientists managed to solve one of them, namely how long one day occurred on the gas planet. According to the results of research published by NASA, one day on Saturn has duration of 10 hours, 33 minutes and 38 seconds.

These results were obtained after scientists used data collected by the Cassini spacecraft in September 2017. In this study, scientists did not see the planet Saturn directly, but looked at the movements of their rings. This idea was first conceived in 1982, but only successfully through Cassini-run missions.

"Researchers used waves on the ring to peek into Saturn's interior and emerged the fundamental characteristics of the planet that has long been sought" Cassini Project Scientist Linda Spilker was quoted as saying by Space on Tuesday, January 22nd 2019. "And that is a solid result. The ring apparently gives us the answer."

The duration of one day at Saturn is difficult to determine because of its shape which is a gas planet. So researchers cannot just wait for the planet to rotate and monitor a landmark, as they do with rocky planets. In addition, the slope of Saturn's magnetic field cannot be used to calculate the duration of one day. This is because the field is in a position almost parallel to the axis of rotation, thus blocking their calculations.
