News24xx.com - Ugandan women's activist group on Thursday, February 7th 2019 criticized the government's campaign to use the promotion of "chubby women" to bring tourists to the east African country. Tourism Minister Godfrey Kiwanda launched a campaign on Wednesday, February 6th 2019 at a press conference attended by a group of chubby female models.

"Uganda is blessed with beautiful women. Their beauty is unique and diverse. That's why we decided to use this as beauty a product that will be marketed along with what we have as a country starting from nature, language and food, to make it a tourist attraction" Kiwanda told AFP.

As part of tourism promotion, the government will also hold a beauty contest, Miss Curvy Uganda, in June. "The winner of the Miss Curvy contest will be part of our tourism campaign brand using beauty as one of the other tourism products" Kiwanda said.

Ugandan women are naturally furious over the plan and are calling for the resignation of Kiwanda. "Thinking that women can be used as objects of sex today is an absurd concept and we condemn it" Rita Aciro, executive director of the Uganda Women's Network, told AFP.
