News24xx.com - The Earth's magnetic field which underwent drastic changes for some time, finally got a recent update. This is stated in the new version of the World Magnetic Model (WMM). The update was announced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through its official website.

The update was actually scheduled to take place on January 15th, but because the United States was undergoing a government shutdown at that time, the update was finally postponed and was carried out earlier this week.

The north magnetic pole changes its position as time passed from Canada to Siberia. The final record shows that it moved around 50 kilometers per year. "The northern magnetic poles moved around 1,000 kilometers in the 1900 and 1990 period and also moved around 1,000 kilometers in the period from the late 1990s to the present, so the changes are very significant" said William Brown, scientist from the British Geological Survey who joined in formulating WMM updates.

Usually, newer versions of WMM are released every five years. This update in 2019 became an anomaly because the latest version of WMM was published in 2015. Changes in the Earth's magnetic north pole are more rapid than usual which made the sudden updates have to be made right away.

"Errors that occur grow slightly faster than usual, especially in the north of Arctic region near the northern magnetic field" said Arnaud Chulliat, researcher from the University of Colorado Boulder and NOAA who contributed to the WMM update.
