News24xx.com - Last Monday, on February 4th, a man named Travis Kauffman went for a run in the Horsetooth Mountain Open Space near Fort Collins, Colorado. However, he encountered a mountain lion during his run and ended up in a fight with it.

He heard a rustle or pine needles behind him. Suddenly, the big cat ambushed him. Kauffman had to fight for his life and surprisingly, he won.

Kauffman (31) moved to Fort Collins about five years ago to live a more active, outdoor lifestyle. He described his experience in fighting the mountain lion in an interview with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

“It was just pure adrenaline. There was a certain point where I just kind of imagined being stuck on this hillside and eventually just having a cat gnaw at me, which is a creepy way to go. But, for the most part, the adrenaline just kept kicking in at those moments,” he said, as cited from CNN.

When the encounter happened, the lion was about 10 feet away. Kauffman threw his arms up and began yelling, hoping to scare the animal. It did not work.

The lion pounced on him and bit the man’s wrist as he tried to protect his face. The two wrestled as they tumble down a slope. While his arm was still trapped inside the lion’s mouth, he managed to pin down its back legs and reached for sticks and rocks to strike it.

“It really clicked after I hit it in the head with a rock and it still didn’t release my wrist, that at that point, more drastic measures were necessary,” he said, as cited from CNN.

Kauffman then pressed his foot down on the lion’s neck and held it down until the animal suffocated and let go of his wrist. He then walked back down the trail, bloodied and injuried. He ran into another runner, who went back down with him. They met a couple near a parking lot and one of them brought him to the hospital.

Kauffman got 19 stitches in his cheek, 6 along the bridge of his nose and 3 on his wrist. He was given antibiotics to prevent infection. However, despite this unpleasant experience, he claimed that he did not regret moving to Colorado to live an outdoor life.

“It’s definitely a very unique state that you can actually see wildlife,” he said
