Before marrying William, Kate is a commoner. She was not a member of royal family and she had no title. But after their marriage, William and Kate are given the title of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. This means they are the sovereign rulers of Cambridge. Their dukedom is in part how the members of the royal family make their money.

Similar to William and Kate, Harry and Meghan earned the title Duke and Duchess of Sussex after their marriage. This means that Harry and Meghan are the sovereign rulers of Sussex, a country in South East England. They gain their incomes from the revenue from the region.

Before Kate and Meghan, there is Camilla Parker Bowles, who married Prince Charles, William and Harry’s father. Camilla did not take the title of princess because of Charles’ former wife, DianaSpencer, titled Princess of Wales. The title of princess has become so closely connected to Diana, so to respect her and to avoid the public disliking her, Camilla chose to take the title Duchess of Cornwall.

In this way, Camilla created a precedent for the next commoners that marry into the royal family. After Camilla, all commoners that marry the princes will not get the title of princess. Many people expected that Kate would become Princess Catherine after she married Prince William. But following Camilla, Kate earned the title of Duchess, as did Meghan after her.
