News24xx.com - Former head of the campaign team of US President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, Paul Manafort, was threatened with a 24-year prison sentence after being found violating a defense agreement with the investigation team related to Russian intervention in the US presidential election which led by Special Advisor Robert Mueller.

As reported by AFP on Saturday, February 16th 2019, in a recent statement, Mueller's office said it agreed to a new calculation by the US Department of Justice about the sentence for Manafort. "Sentences of imprisonment for 235 months (19 years) to 293 months (24 years), and fines between USD 50 thousand to USD 24 million, parole with the obligation to report per 5 years, compensation of USD 24 million and appropriation of assets of USD 4 millions" said Mueller's office.

The new agreement was reached after earlier this month, federal district judge Amy Berman Jackson agreed with local prosecutors that Manafort had 'deliberately' lied to investigators about his communication with a suspected Russian agent named Konstantin Kilimnik in 2016 and 2017.

The lie was made by Manafort even though he had vowed to cooperate with US authorities in a defense agreement agreed on in September 2018. Judge Jackson also said Manafort lied about the secret payments he gave to a law firm and lied again when asked by investigators about separate confidential cases.
