News24xx.com - Sleep deprivation has long been associated with various health problems, including heart disease. But not many studies have revealed in detail how the two are related. In an experiment in mice, scientists from the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Systems Biology observed the effects of sleep deprivation on its blood vessels.

Revealed, lack of sleep provides a change in hormonal composition. In the group of sleepless mice, it was observed a decrease in the hormone hypocretin aka orexin which increased the production of infiltrating cells in the bone marrow. This inflammation is associated with atheroschlerosis, hardening the blood vessel walls due to the formation of plaque.

The findings, published in the journal Nature, show that adequate sleep can protect a person from the risk of atheroschlerosis. Conversely, lack of sleep can make the condition worsen.

This experiment was carried out in genetically designed mice susceptible to atherosclerosis. Therefore, further research is needed to confirm whether the same conclusions could be applied to humans. "We now need to study this connection in humans" said one researcher, Filip Swirski, quoted from LiveScience.
