Experts said in 2050, almost half of the population will suffer nearsighted


IllustrationIllustration - According to a study by US’ National Health Institute, in 2050, it is predicted that half of the world population will suffer myopia or nearsighted. And those who will become nearsighted in the future are still children in the present time.

Sahba Jalali, an optometrist from Columbia and the director of Advanced Vision Clinic said that thie prediction is possible. This is because children these days cannot be separated from gadgets, like computer, television, laptop, mobile phone and tablets.

Maggie Cardonell, MD, a doctor specialized in children’s eye health also expresses similar concern. She is worried about the long-term effect of using gadgets.

“I often explain to parents, what is worrying is that the newest study that activities like spending times on mobile phone, computer or playing video games, at least become components that contribute to the increase of myopia epidemic all over the world,” she said.

Myopia cannot only cause the victim difficulty in seeing things from a far distance. It can also cause us to lose out sight completely. That is why if you do not want your children to be part of the people who suffer nearsightedness in the future, start limiting their use of gadgets.

According to Pediatric Academy of America, children aged 2 to 5 can only use gadget for one hour in a day. Meanwhile, the use of gadgets on babies and toddlers under the age of 2 is completely forbidden.
