News24xx.com - Philippines officially out from United Nations (UN) International Criminal Court (ICC), and that was effective immediately since March 17, 2019. The reason is that President Rodrigo Duterte objected because of the drug eradication war he declared was intensively investigated by the UN.

"The Secretary General made a notification to all countries that the Philippine decision to withdraw will be effective on March 17" said ICC UN spokesman Eri Kaneko, as reported by AFP on Sunday, March 17th 2019.

Duterte maintains a bloody drug war policy which is presumed to have killed thousands of victims by reason of protecting his country. Although criticized, Duterte said he did not care because all this time other countries never cared about the Philippines. In February 2018, the prosecutor at the ICC, Fatou Bensouda, began gathering material and information regarding alleged human rights violations related to the Duterte-style drug war.

The Philippines chose to withdraw from the ICC after in 2018 the agency began investigating alleged violations in the Duterte-style drug war. However, they stated that they have never been legally a member of the ICC, arguing that they have never fulfilled all the conditions set.

"Our position on this issue is clear, unambiguous, and permanent. The Philippines has never been a country that supports the Rome Statute which forms the basis of the ICC" Philippine Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
