News24xx.com - A new study published on Thursday in Scientific Reports reveals that domestic cats do recognize their own names. They just do not care when you call them.

The study had cat owners saying four words that sound similar to their cats’ names repeatedly. Then, the owners will say the cats’ real name. The researchers observed whether the cats were able to distinguish their names from the similar sounding words. The study found that the cats had more prominent response when their owners called their names, such as moving their ears or tails, or meowing.

Next, the researchers had strangers calling the cats by their names and see their reactions. The cats showed less prominent response compared when they were called by their owners, but they still seemed to recognize their names.

“This new study clearly shows that many cats react to their own names when spoken by their owners,” said biologist John Bradshaw.

“Cats are just as good as dogs at learning. They’re just not as keen to show their owners what they’ve learned,” he added.
