News24xx.com - According to a recent study published in the journal American Osteopathic Association, people who usually use marijuana may need a larger dose of anesthetic if they undergo surgery. According to researchers, this happens because marijuana substance in the body seems to affect the effectiveness of some anesthetic drugs.

Study leader Dr. Mark Twardowski of Western Medical Associates said the content of marijuana can remain in the body for a long period of time maybe up to several months. Therefore, it is important for a patient to speak up to the doctor and told if they used marijuana before underwent a surgery, especially with more and more countries legalize the use of marijuana for recreation.

Of the 250 patients in the study, around 10 percent claimed to use marijuana regularly. Well, when using drugs compared to patients who used to consume marijuana, it took twice the dose of propofol drugs, 14 percent more doses of fentanyl drugs, and 20 percent more doses of midazolam drugs.

Most of the patients studied had to undergo mild surgery for a colonoscopy. "Clearly the fact that cannabis use affects the effectiveness of these three drugs certainly raises a lot of questions about the potential effects on other drugs such as painkillers, anxiety drugs, and so on" Dr. Mark was quoted as saying by Reuters on Tuesday, April 16th 2019.
