According to reports from a number of Palestinian news agencies, the fire was allegedly sourced from the mosque guard room located on the roof of the Marwani room, on Monday, April 15th 2019 night local time. "The Islamic Waqf firefighting service has succeeded in extinguishing the fire" said their report.

According to the Director of Jerusalem Waqf and Al Aqsa Mosque, Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, a fire broke out in the square which was allegedly caused by children playing firecrackers. However, that conclusion cannot be ascertained. The Marwani Room is located southeast of Haram al-Sharif, which is a complex of Rock Dome and Al Aqsa Mosque.

The complex located in the Old City, East Jerusalem. At first the area was occupied by Jordan during the Arab-Israeli war in 1948. However, Israel captured it in the 1967 War. The Zionist state then occupied all of Jerusalem in 1980, but Jordan was given the right to be the caretaker of the Al Aqsa Complex.
