News24xx.com - The latest study in the United States shows that the number of children and teenager who visit emergency rooms because of attempting suicide has doubled in recent years. "Most of the children with suicide attempts were immediately taken to the ER" said study leader from McGill University Brett Burstein, quoted by Reuters.

The study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that emergency visits due to suicide attempts in children aged 5-18 years jumped from 580 thousand in 2007 to 1.1 million cases in 2015. This data was obtained after researchers analyzed visits to the emergency unit at children.

About 87 percent of visits to the ER were related to suicidal thoughts. About 2 percent needed hospitalization after a suicide attempt. The study also found that as many as 43 percent of children who came to the ER because of suicide attempts are children aged 5-10 years.

Only 13 percent of these children received treatment from a child psychiatry or mental health specialist. "The increase in this number means we need to add resources to community-based mental health services" Burstein said.
