News24xx.com - Ever seen someone sleeping with their eyes half open? Or perhaps you have experienced it yourself? This may be a strange habit, but turns out this habit can be harmful to the eyes. Quoted from Health Line, sleeping with eyes open in the medical world is called nocturnal lagophthalmos which caused by problems that occur in the nerves or facial muscles.

Nocturnal lagophthalmos is associated with physical abnormalities of the eyes, face, or eyelids, or eyelashes that develop in the eyes. Meanwhile, quoted from Very Well Health, nocturnal lagophthalmos is considered as a form of facial paralysis involving the orbicularis muscle in the eyelid that is temporary or permanent. This can be caused by Bell's Palsy, infection, stroke, surgery, and trauma.

Nocturnal symptoms of lagophthalmos include dry eyes, pain, redness, and blurred vision. If you feel symptoms like this when you wake up, you should check with your doctor. Usually patients with nocturnal lagophthalmos will take a Schirmer test which is used to measure tears and ensure sufficient moisture.
