News24xx.com - Researchers from the Netherlands analyzed brain scans and found that the higher the fat in the body the lower the brain volume in some areas. Specifically, too much body fat is associated with a reduction in the amount of gray matter, the brain tissue that contains nerve cells in the middle part of the brain.

According to a study published in the journal Radiology, the link appeared higher in women. They also see changes in white matter, a long nerve fiber that helps communicate, which caused by fat.

"It is still unclear why fat levels are associated with shrinking brain volume or differences in white matter. One thought is that high body fat levels can cause inflammation that damages brain tissue. Smaller brain volumes can indicate loss of neurons in that area" the researchers wrote as quoted from the Daily Mail.

However, because this study was conducted only at one time, it is still unclear whether obesity changes the brain or whether people with less gray matter volume in some areas are at high risk of obesity. Therefore, the researchers noted that they still need further study and research on this matter. In order to find out the actual connection whether by losing weight can help the brain better.
