News24xx.com - The monkeypox virus was first discovered in Singapore. The virus was found in a Nigerian man. As reported by Reuters on Sunday, May 12th 2019, Monkeypox is a virus similar with smallpox that is common in humans. This virus was eradicated in 1980. This virus does not spread easily from person to person but in rare cases, this virus can be fatal.

The monkeypox virus infection in humans has only been reported three times outside Africa, namely in the United States, Britain and Israel. Such is the statement from the US-based Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The Singapore Ministry of Health said that the infected patient is a 38-year-old Nigerian who arrived in the country at the end of April.

At present, an investigation has been doing. A total of 23 people have been identified as having had physical contact with the man. "Even though the risk of spread is low, the Ministry of Health is taking preventive measures" the ministry said.

Before arriving in Singapore, the man attended a wedding in Nigeria and could’ve eaten meat which can become the source of transmission of the virus. The intended meat can be chimpanzees, gorillas, deer, birds or rodents.
