News24xx.com - NASA has set a target to be able to send astronauts to the Moon in 2024. This mission has just been named as Artemis. The name Artemis is chosen because it refers to two things in Greek mythology. First, Artemis is Apollo's twin brother who became the name of NASA's first mission to the Moon, which started 50 years ago.

The second reason is because Artemis is the goddess of the Moon. This is important because in the upcoming mission NASA also intends to land the first female astronaut to the surface of the Moon. The name of this Artemis mission was announced by NASA through social media following the announcement of an additional budget of USD 1.6 billion for NASA's mission to the Moon. NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine also mentioned this name when talking to journalists.

"I think it's very beautiful that 50 years after Apollo, the Artemis program will bring the next man - and the first woman - to the Moon" Bridenstine was quoted as saying by TechCrunch on Wednesday, May 15th 2019. "I have an 11-year-old daughter, and I want her to be able to see herself in the same role as the next woman who goes to the Moon" she continued.

The choice of Artemis's name is also interesting, because besides being the goddess of the Moon, she is also a goddess of hunting. Her hunting friend is named Orion, is the same as a space vehicle being developed by NASA to bring astronauts to the Moon and Mars.
