The name Artemis is chosen because it refers to two things in Greek mythology. The second reason is because Artemis is the goddess of the Moon. This is important because in the upcoming mission NASA also intends to land the first female astronaut to the surface of the Moon. The name of this Artemis mission was announced by NASA through social media following the announcement of an additional budget of USD 1.6 billion for NASA's mission to the Moon. NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine also mentioned this name when talking to journalists.

The choice of Artemis's name is also interesting, because besides being the goddess of the Moon, she is also a goddess of hunting. Her hunting friend is named Orion, is the same as a space vehicle being developed by NASA to bring astronauts to the Moon and Mars.
