News24xx.com - Food additives commonly used as bleaching agent in products such as gum and mayonnaise can cause inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. A study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition investigated the health effects of food additives named E171 or titanium dioxide nanoparticles which are commonly used in high amounts in foods and some drugs as bleaching agents.

Researchers found this E171 substance in more than 900 food products consumed in large quantities every day by the general public. Quoted from IOL, eating foods containing E171 affects the intestinal microbiota, which triggers diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer.

"This study presents important evidence that consumption of foods containing food additives E171 affects intestinal microbiota and inflammation in the intestine, which can cause diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer" said study author Wojciech Chrzanowski, a professor from the University of Sydney.
