News24xx.com - An Australian man found a chunk of gold weighing 1.4 kilograms using a metal detector in a gold field in Western Australia, locals said. A shop in the city of Kalgoorlie distributed photos of the chunks of gold at an online site, which is estimated to be worth around AUD 100,000.

The unknown man is a local citizen who has experience and a hobby as a gold hunter, said shop owner Matt Cook to the BBC. The findings of gold in this size are known to occur several times a year, experts say.

About three quarters of gold mining in Australia is around the Kalgoorlie region. Cook, who owns an equipment shop for gold hunters, said the man detected a kind of metal not far from the location of the saltbush plant area, about 45cm below the surface.

"He walked to my shop and showed me a golden nugget in his hand with a huge smile on his face" Cook told the BBC. "The size is about a little bigger than a pack of cigarettes, and it's really amazing, it's very heavy!".

"With the huge profits they saw in the mining activities, many people become gold hunters and try their luck on weekends. They do it as a hobby, and there are people who do it full time, most of the gold found is less than half ounce, but they find it quite often." said Prof. Sam Spearing, head of the Western Australia Mining School at Curtin University commenting on the phenomenon that happens in the area.
