Is is true that the swallowed gum can last in our stomach for over 7 years?

IllustrationIllustration - The human body has amazing wonders in many ways. For example, there is a fact that the body can produce millions of blood cells in less than 60 seconds. But in some cases, people believed on myths about things that happen to the body in several conditions.

And one myth says that swallowed gum can last for seven years in the body. "It's almost the same as swallowing watermelon seeds will make you grow watermelons in the stomach" said Caleb Backe, health and fitness expert for Maple Holistics quoted from the Reader's Digest.

Even though it's not suggested to swallow gum but is it tru that it will stay undigest in our body for 7 years?, it's true that there is a part in the gum that can't be digested. However, this does not mean that this undigested part will last for years because the swallowed gum only lasts for a week in our stomach. This is because the stomach periodically empties its contents into the small intestine.

So, if you swallow a bubble gum, it will move to the large intestine and eventually come out when you defecate. "Swallowing gum repeatedly can cause a number of parts from the gum that cannot be digested which has the potential to cause intestinal blockages" said Edwin McDonald, a gastroenterologist and associate director for adult nutrition at the University of Chicago.
