News24xx.com - Nowadays, many millennials in South Korea choose to be single. A survey conducted by the South Korean Institute for Health and Social Affairs shows that less than 40% men and women aged 20 to 44 are active in dating. The rest choose to be single.

Even more surprising, young people in South Korea are not interested in marriage. Research in 2015, 90% of men and 77% of women aged 25 to 29 years were not married.

The biggest reason of this lifestyle is economic factor. In the past few years, the unemployment rate is soaring in the country. Dating, getting married and having children are considered no longer important for young people in South Korea. As quoted from the South China Morning Post, a survey in 2013 showed that average couples in South Korea spent at least USD 90 thousand just to get married, including buildings, wedding gifts for in-laws and other matters.

As quoted by CNN, the cost of dating is also expensive in South Korea. The matchmaking company Duo estimates the cost of a single date is around USD 55. While the minimum wage in South Korea is around USD 7 per hour. So, they need to work about 8 hours to pay for a single date.

A work culture in South Korea also contributes in making millennials choose to be single. They don't have time to date because of high working hours. In a data show that South Koreans work 250 hours more than Americans. So, they focus more on work and career.

South Korean culture is still very conservative and patriarchal, women who want to get married usually have to give up their careers. This makes women feel that it is unfair. This reason sometimes makes women in South Korea choose to be single.
