News24xx.com - If you have the habit of sleeping with the lights on, it's suggested for you to stop doing that. A study shows that the light on during sleep, whether from television or other room lights is associated with an increased risk of obesity, especially in women.

The study, published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine on Monday, June 10th 2019 showed specifically, sleeping with a light on can make the body weight rises 5 kg over a five-year period. Quoted from CNN, this study analysed 43,722 women and found that sleeping with light on significantly was associated with an increased risk of weight gain and obesity, especially in women.

"This study found that all types of artificial light on at night, such as small night lights, outdoor lights and lights or televisions in the room, are associated with weight gain over a six-year period and during a 12-year follow-up after the study began" said Dale Sandler, a researcher from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in North Carolina and a senior author of the study.

In addition, women who sleep with light on are less likely to have wakefulness and sleep patterns that are consistent and more likely to have less sleep, take longer to fall asleep, and will often wake up at night. Overall, this study notes that sleeping with lights on can be associated with socio-economic loss measures and unhealthy lifestyle behaviours.
