News24xx.com - Suddenly, a new island emerged offshore near in Cape Point, North Carolina, USA. The 1.6 kilometer long island in the Atlantic Ocean, first appeared in April 2017.

Janice Regan and her granddaughter Caleb (11) were among the first visitors to the island dubbed of Shelly Island.

"In April, the island was just a small mound," Regan told The Virginian Pilot.

The island was nicknamed Shelly Island because it is considered one of the best places to collect seashells. The North Carolina coast is one of the most dynamic ocean environments on Earth. There are more than 2,000 shipwrecks since 1585.

A geomorphologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Andrew Ashton, speculates that the island is emerging because of high tides or strong water currents caused by storms that then accumulate sediment near the surface.

Shelly Island continues to be visited by tourists, both for those who want to collect shells and want to see firsthand the new island.

However, experts have warned visitors of the dangers that exist on Shelly Island.

The Inspector of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Dave Hallac, advised people not to try to walk or swim to reach Shelly Island because of the strong currents. Sharks along the 1.5 meters and large stingrays are seen several times around the island.

However, President of North Carolina Beach Buggy Association, Bill Smith, more worried about the threat of drown of someone. The reason is, the current there is very tight even though the distance between the mainland with Shelly Island only as far as 46 meters.

But some people have managed to get through it without tools, one of them is Travis Phillips.
