News24xx.com - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has rejected US calls for a direct ceasefire in northern Syria.

Turkey launched an attack designed to oust Kurdish forces after US forces left.

Russia, which supports Syria, said it was preventing clashes between Turkish and Syrian forces.

Turkey considers elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) led by Kurds as a terrorist organization and wants to push them away from the border area.

Turkey also wants to create a "safe zone" that reaches about 30 km to Syria to return the two million Syrian refugees currently in Turkey.

However, Syrian forces - supported by Russia - move to the north at the weekend as a result of an agreement with the Kurds to try to hold Turkish operations.

Dozens of civilians have died in operations so far and at least 160,000 people have left the area, according to the United Nations.

President Endorgan said that they would not make a ceasefire with reporters on Tuesday.

President Erdogan stressed the aim of the attack would be achieved. "They pressured us to stop the operation. They announced sanctions. Our aim is clear. We are not worried about  the sanctions," the president added.

US sanctions against Turkey will worsen if Turkey does not immediately make a ceasefire and negotiate a long-term settlement at the border.
