A child from China must lose his eyesight due to playing with silica powder or food preservatives.

The preservative, which usually has a warning that it should not be eaten, is in fact really dangerous, even if it is not consumed.

According to an Evening News report, the doctor treating the child said his right eye tissue appeared to have rusted after being accidentally contaminated with the powder. Reportedly the powder entered his eyes after mixing with water. As a result, one eye is now permanently blind.

The terrible incident began when he got his favorite snack after succeeding in a test.

He found a small package of preservatives in his snack bag and put it in a bottle containing his drink. However, unexpectedly a surprising thing suddenly happened. The drink he mixed then sprayed as it exploded and hit the eyes.

Unfortunately, the child loses his eyesight and feels extreme pain when the fluid enters his right eye.

Liu Ping, a professor of public health from Shandong University explained that there is a type of preservative that maintains the moisture of food packaging made from calcium oxide, also known as raw lime.

It is cheaper than silica gel and is more commonly used, but is also relatively more dangerous than silica gel and other desiccant types.

When mixed with water, the substance will undergo a chemical reaction that allows the closed bottle to explode.
