After being observed on a public road a few days ago, it turned out that two wild Sumatran elephants are still roaming in Mandau District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau. Not just hanging around, the two fat-bodied animals had damaged the guardrail of the road not far from the Mandau Police Headquarters.

As previously released by the mass media, the two wild elephants are known to be named Seruni, an elephant androgynous female and its size is smaller.

This was justified by the Public Relations Center for Conservation of Natural Resources (BBKSDA) Riau, Dian. In a written message Wednesday, December 4, 2019, Dian said, so far it was still continuing to monitor the activities of the two wild elephants.

"Seruni and one of her children. Our team is still monitoring the location," she explained.

Dian further explained, Mandau Mapolsek location is indeed close to the Chevron Green Belt and one stretch of the Talang forest, which is included in the Balai Raja Wildlife Reserve.

In the past, Seruni had a male elephant pair named Dita. But some time ago Dita was found dead.

"Since Gajah Dita died, Seruni and her child often appeared. But so far, Seruni has not disturbed her," she added.

Until this news was revealed, the BBKSDA team and the Mandau police were still monitoring the location. This monitoring also provides information to the surrounding community so as not to overreact to the protected animals. ***
