SIAK-Siak Rice Kota Istana, a local brand rice from Siak Regency, Riau, was finally officially patented by obtaining a certificate of geographical indication from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

After the Regional Food Security meeting, the Head of Siak Syahrial Regency's Food Security Office revealed, with this certificate, it is expected that there will be no claim on this rice.

Syahrial said, this aims to increase the combined capacity of farmer groups (Gapoktan) to become a strong food economic institution, as well as bringing food closer to the community.

"The aim is to improve the welfare of the community because it can be sold on its own label," said Syahrial, at the Siak Regent's Office, Tuesday (12/10/2019).

He explained, Geographical Indications (IG) is a form of legal protection for superior products that are developed specifically. IG is given to community groups, while patents are granted to individuals.

He obtained the certificate from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, then at the Food Security Meeting it was handed over to the City of Siak Gapoktan Food Association of the City of Palaces (PGP-SKI).

The Chairman of PGP-SKI Rusnata previously took the initiative to gather gapoktan colleagues to form associations. Initially they found it difficult to market rice from farmers, both from Bungaraya farmers, Sabak Auh, and from the Mandau River.

It turned out he continued, after being given a brand the people could receive the rice. "After we give the brand, maintain the quality and check the residue, Alhamdulillah, it can penetrate the market," Rusnata said.

Currently, rice production has been marketed not only to meet the local needs of rice in Siak Regency, but has also been sold to the City of Pekanbaru. But he admitted that he had not been able to meet all the requests for rice supply of the pride of the State Palace because of limited capital.

For this reason, he hopes that the regional government in the future can help access capital to increase production and the whole rice produced by the Siak district farmers can be accepted by the community. (R24 / Lin)
