Hundreds of extremists suddenly attacked a Niger military camp near the border with Mali with shootings and mortars, killing 71 soldiers, the defense ministry said Wednesday.

Tuesday's attack on Inates in the western Tillaberi region is the deadliest in the Niger military since the country's Islamist militant violence began in 2015.

"Sadly, we regret announcing the following casualties: 71 military personnel were killed, 12 injured. The others are gone, "the defense ministry said in a statement broadcast on national television.

The attack was carried out by heavily armed terrorists estimated to number in the hundreds.

The battle lasted for three hours, combining artillery fire with the use of kamikaze vehicles by the enemy.

Niger troops fought against Boko Haram guerrillas on the southeastern border with Nigeria and extremists allied with the Islamic State in the west near Mali and Libya.

Niger President Issoufou Mahamadou shortened a visit to a peace and security conference in Egypt to return to Niamey, the presidency said on Twitter.

Army reinforcements were rushed to the scene and situation on Wednesday "under control" the defense ministry said, stressing that the search for the attackers was ongoing, even though they were "fleeing across our borders".
