News24xx.com - A patient at Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital (RSMH) in Palembang, South Sumatra, was declared negative for COVID-19 after undergoing a second examination.

The head of the RSMH infectious disease team, Zein Ahmad said that the 62-year-old patient was first tested on February 17, 2020. The patient had respiratory problems after returning from a trip to Malaysia.

On February 21, examination results stated that the patient was free of coronavirus infection. On February 22, the hospital research staff examined the patient's blood and larynx tissue samples.

"Final diagnosis results have been released, and the patient is officially negative for the corona virus," Zein said on Monday. "The condition of [the patient] is stable with normal temperatures," he added.

The hospital decided to conduct a second laboratory examination on the patient considering Malaysia is one of the countries that has reported COVID-19 cases. Medical records from patients from previous hospitals revealed that they also suffered from heart problems.

Even though the hospital was satisfied that the patient was suffering from acute lung inflammation due to bacterial infection, RSMH decided to place them in an isolated room after seeing their travel records to Malaysia.

South Sumatra Health Agency Head Lesti Nuraini said that she had received a report about the patient. This information has also been sent to patients' families, which allows them to publish news.

Lesti said that patients' families are constantly seeking treatment updates.

"We always communicate about the condition of [patients] in the isolation room with family. Families may feel very worried considering they see patients being treated in isolation rooms with special equipment, "he said.

He added that his team had quarantined 40 South Sumatra residents who had returned from a trip to China since January 29. The quarantine period is 14 days as stipulated in the standard procedure. The health agency is being assisted by community health center workers from each patient's area.

The latest update stated that 34 people were negative, while six others were still quarantined.

"So far we can say that South Sumatra is safe, we don't have a case here," Lesti said.

To prevent further transmission of the virus, the South Sumatra government has examined every entry point to the province, and ordered every hospital in the district and city to provide isolation space.

The government also urges people to maintain a healthy and hygienic lifestyle.

Fenty Wardhapada of quarantine and epidemiological surveillance of the Palembang Port Health Authority (KKP) said that he oversees aircraft, cargo ships and passenger ships in the international arrivals section of airports and ports, especially for ships from China, Malaysia and Vietnam.

"We have inspected four ships from Malaysia and Vietnam today with a total of 71 crew members. There are also direct flights that enter from Malaysia with a total of 100 passengers. Everything is under control, "he said.
