So far, 57 cases have been confirmed in the US, 14 originating from the US alone and 40 are foreign nationals. The foreigner was sent home from a Diamond Princess cruise ship to Japan and 3 passengers were evacuated from China.

Despite the current low threat of the coronavirus in the US, Dr. Nancy Messonier, director of the CDC of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease, said the public must be prepared if the virus becomes a pandemic.

"This is not a question of whether this will happen in this country again but the question of when this will happen," he told reporters in a media call on Tuesday.

"We ask Americans to prepare for hopes that this might be bad."

Dr. Messonier was so concerned that he suggested parents call their children's schools and ask if there were plans for children to attend classes via the Internet or via video chat if buildings needed to be closed.
