News24xx.com -  A team of researchers from the University of Durham, the United Kingdom, conducted a research on eclipses and other space events in the last 27 century.

Changes in the polar surface, the electromagnetic activity of the earth's core and the surface of the seawater are among some factors that affect the slowing of the earth's rotation over time.

Other studies have also found that a slightly slowed of Earth rotation in next year could trigger more earthquakes than usual.

According to research from American Geological Association, the slow rotation in 100 years, will mark with more earthquakes.

"The number of earthquakes that appear each year in the last century is very well known," said study co-author Roger Bilham, a geophysicist at University of Colorado Boulder.

The basic idea is when the Earth's rotation slows down slightly, it made the equator will shrinks.

Bilham explains it can add pressure to the already pressured plate boundaries so that earthquakes are more likely to occur.

Bilham and colleague Rebecca Bendick, a geophysicist at University of Montana in Missoula, reviewed there are 15 large earthquakes per year since 1900.

However, in certain periods, there are 25 until 35 of earthquakes in a year. The period was coincides when the Earth rotates more slowly, which means one day will run longer.

Changes in Earth's rotation speed can be caused by weather patterns such as El Nino, ocean currents, and currents in Earth's liquid core.

"We have no information about the location of the earthquake that will occur, unless it occurs on the boundary of the world's plates," said Bilham.

Amos Nur, a geophysicist at Stanford University in California, believes that scientists do not yet understand what exactly triggered an earthquake and have not been able to predict the earthquake. However, there are several ways to validate the research. So quoted from Live Science, Tuesday, November 20, 2017.
