Revealed, one million baby die when they are born in Pakistan
News24xx.com - One million children die on the day they are born every year, and 1.6 million can not to survive past the first month, the UN children's agency said in a new report.
Newborns in Pakistan, Central African Republic (CAR) and Afghanistan have the fewest chance of survival, according to a UNICEF report released on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.
More than 80 percent of newborn deaths are caused by premature birth, complications during childbirth or infection. However, this death can be prevented by access to quality health and nutrition services, as well as clean water and adequate facilities.
"Given that the majority of these deaths are preventable, obviously, we are failing to save babies born in the world's poorest countries," UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said.
Poverty, conflict, and weak institutions are blamed on pregnant women and babies who do not receive the help they need.
In Pakistan, one in 22 newborns does not to survive past the first month.
"Death occurs due to a number of causes, including home delivery, anemic mothers and poor sanitary conditions," said Mubina Agboatwalla, head of Health-Oriented Prevention Education
"Simple things like washing hands will reduce death rates by half."
Tharparkar District of Pakistan has been the most severe victim in terms of infant mortality.
More than 1,500 children under the age of five die in the southern district from 2011 to 2016. Nearly 80 percent of births have less weight. The main cause, according to doctors, is poverty and malnutrition.
In addition, lack of education and access to family planning for girls, early marriage and teenage pregnancy play a major role in increasing infant mortality, Agboatwalla said.
"The girl is not old enough to take care of herself and her baby unless the girl is educated, they can not understand the message of precautions." Family planning, unfortunately, has lost its interest here.
Last year, increasing violence in the country brought the number of internally displaced people to 688.700, the highest rate since the crisis began in 2013.
UNICEF says that many women can not access health services because of the conflict.
Bangui, the nation's capital, has the only child hospital in the country.
Government hospitals should serve hundreds of patients every day. But, with limited medical supplies and staff shortages, including specialists, the situation is far from satisfactory.
Almost two out of every 30 children born in this hospital die every day
"We are in crisis, we have to complete the health center, this situation is not sustainable," said Gody Chrysostone, one of five pediatricians at CAR.
Stefan Peterson, head of the UNICEF health department, pointed to the high number of early marriage and teenage pregnancy as one of the reasons behind death rates worldwide.
According to Girls Not Brides, a global partnership that working to end child marriages, 15 million girls are married before the age of 18 each year. More than 700 million women and girls living today are married before they are 18 years old.
"These are high-risk pregnancy for both mother and baby," Peterson said.
"Delaying pregnancy and ensuring the girls go to school is very important not only to individuals and communities but also to helps in lowering mortality rates."
"We want to reach the point where we no longer have children who give birth to children, and newborn deaths are inevitable and preventable."
