News24xx.com -  The government of Myanmar has destroyed at least 55 villages inhabited by Rohingya, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).

Satellite images that released by human rights groups on Friday show that, between December 2017 and mid-February, areas once once filled with buildings and greenery have been completely cleared.

HRW described the actions of the Burmese security forces as an "ethnic cleansing campaign" and called on the UN and Myanmar's donors to demand an end to the demolition.

A total of 362 villages have been destroyed since the Myanmar military started a campaign against Rohingya in August last year, according to HRW.

Brad Adams, director of HRW in Asia, said that the destruction of the village was deliberately done to hide evidence of "serious crimes".

Rohingya activist Ro Nay San Lwin said as quoted from Al Jazeera said that he had heard reports about villages that deliberately leveled.

"I have been hearing about bulldozing who leveled the villages since the beginning of January," he said, adding: "There are many houses, mosques and Islamic schools that remain intact in ... Maungdaw but everything is dismantled and flattened with bulldozers."

"But before the first Rakhine officers entered the house and took the things they wanted"

Since August more than 650,000 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar to neighboring Bangladesh where they live in camps near the border.

Those who escaped brought reports of rape, murder and destruction of homes by Burmese soldiers and vigilante groups.

The United Nations has described their situation as genocide, but only little action has been taken by the UN to stop the Burmese government's campaign.

Bangladesh and Myanmar have agreed a deal to send Rohingya refugees back.

As part of the repatriation agreement, Rohingya will be held in a detention center, which Rohingya activists call a "concentration camp".
