Captain of Fiorentina sudden illness, and all Serie A match were called off


Davide AstoriDavide Astori - Captain Fiorentina and Italy international, Davide Astori has died at the age of 31. Thedefender died after a sudden illness.

Fiorentina were scheduled to play against Udinese in Serie A on Sunday afternoon March 4, 2018 but the Serie A match was canceled after the news of Astori's died.

Astori joined with Fiorentina in 2016 after moving from Cagliari and has made 58 appearances with Fiorentina.

Cagliari delayed the match against Genoa on Sunday morning.

"Fiorentina were very surprised by the death of captain Davide Astori after a sudden illness," Fiorentina said.

Astori left a wife and two-year-old daughter, and joined Cagliari in 2008.

He spent eight years at the club before finally moving permanently to Fiorentina two years ago.

Gianluigi Buffon paid tribute to his friend. He said: "You have a great wife. Your little girl deserves to know that her father was in all respects a perfect person. You wee one of the best sports figures that I have ever met."

AC Milan said in a statement: "Astori is a man who loves football and who grows up as a footballer with us. AC Milan is surprised by Davide Astori's death, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and also to Fiorentina."
