Seven hotspots detected in Riau


Forest fires in RiauForest fires in Riau -  Forest and land fires have begun to reappear in Sumatra. The Terra and Aqua satellites detected twenty five hotspots indicating forest fires in five province on Monday, March 5 2018. It was seen with a confidence level of above 50 percent.

"Twenty five hot spots are found in five province," Slamet Riyadi, head of the data and information section of the Pekanbaru meteorology office, stated.

Ten hotspots were detected in Bengkulu, one each in Jambi and South Sumatera, six hotspots were detected in Riau Islands Province and seven hotspots were detected in Riau Province.

Senior Commissioner Guntur Aryo Tejo, spokesman of the Riau Police, noted that most forest and plantation fires in Riau were deliberate and caused by humans.

The number of hotspots across the country has decreased significantly, from 21,929 in 2015 to 3,915 hotspots in 2016 and 2,567 hotspots in 2017.

In Riau, most of the hot spots were detected in Meranti Islands (2 spots) followed by Kampar, Dumai, Pelalawan, Rokan Hulu and Indragiri Hulu (each one spots). The rest were detected in Bengkalis and Kuantan Singingi regencies.

“Seven hot spots [in Riau] show strong indication of [forest or land] fires,” Slamet said.

The BMKG began detecting hot spots in Riau two weeks ago.
