News24xx.com - The Social Democratic Party (SPD), one of Germany's two main parties, for the first time since 154 years ago elected a female leader.

Andrea Nahles, 47 year old, was elected to replace Martin Schulz, who stepped down after the SPD earned the worst vote since 1933 in last year's election. Nahles, a former labor minister, defeated two other candidates.

The center-left SPD is now a coalition partner of the government ruled by central-right CSU party leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel. In her victory speech, Nahles vowed to fight for social justice and prosperity.

"We need a framework of solidarity in economics and finance, because solidarity in the global, neo-liberal and turbo-digital world is at minimum" she told at party convention in Wiesbaden."And, also, let's be honest, for some people, that solidarity is also minimal in the social democracy itself"

Before join the SPD, Nahles once led the organization of the SPD youth wing of Jusos, and close to the union. Known for her outspoken speech, the stone mason's daughter once said her ideals between being a housewife or being a German chancellor.

Nahles is a single mom with one daughter. Unlike the Protestant Merkels, Nahles is a Roman Catholic. Despite the political differences, the two leaders are said having close friendships.

"This is a miracle, they can stand up each other, considering it appears they are from two completely different planets, Merkel, the leader who always wants to take over the various situations, and Nahles, the impulsive politician" wrote German magazine Spiegel last month.
