News24xx.com - Fasting during Ramadhan month is an obligatory worship for Muslims. Including for those who work in extreme environment, like astronauts.

According to history, Muslim astronauts can still fast in International Space Station (ISS). For example, in Ramadhan 1405 Hijriah, Sultan bin Salman Al Saud, a Muslim astronaut, still did his mission while fasting.

“Religious scholars say I can end my fasting according to the time of the place in which I took off from,” Sultan said. He ended his fast according to the time in Kennedy Space Center, Florida, from where he had taken off.

Sultan sought religious advice from Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Baz to be able to fast during hos work. According to Baz, he can also do sholat in space, by cleaning himself with wet towel first, because there is not gravity in space.

During his time in space, Sultan can finished Quran in only six days. He took off on Ramadhan 29th and celebrated Eid Al-Fitr in space. Sultan is recorded not only as the first Muslim to go to space, but also the first Muslim to spend Ramadhan in space.

Muslim astronauts actually have two choices regarding fasting. First, they can do it in ISS or qada or compensate it on earth. Islam recommends us to travel around and see the outside world like space. However, even in space, we should not forget our obligatory rituals as Muslim.
