News24xx.com - The UN Human Rights Council agreed to send an international team of war crimes investigators to investigate the shooting of Palestinian demonstrators in Gaza. The shooting by Israeli forces killed at least 62 people.

In a vote on Friday, May 18th 2018, UN human rights agency issued a resolution calling on the council to "immediately send an independent, international commission of inquiry". This is the highest level investigation of the UN Human Rights Council.

In voting, only 2 members of 47 members rejected the resolution, while 29 countries supported and 14 abstained, including Britain, Switzerland and Germany. The two countries rejected are the United States and Australia.

The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley was furious and condemned the resolution as "another embarrassing day for human rights".

"As Venezuela moves towards dictatorship, Iran imprisons thousands of political opponents, and ethnic cleansing takes place in Burma (Myanmar), the UN Human Rights Council has decided to launch an investigation into the defense of a legitimate democratic state over its own border from a terrorist attack" Haley as reported by the AFP news agency, Saturday,  May 19th 2018.

In the resolution mentioned, the team will investigate all alleged violations and violence. In the context of a military offensive against large-scale civilian protest actions started on March 30th, 2018, including those that may be the same as war crimes. "

Voting was held after six weeks of demonstrations and clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli troops along the Gaza border. In the demonstration, Palestinians demand to be able to return to their homes that are now are the Israeli territory.
